Quantum technology in everyday decisions

Heissen QRNG is a mobile app that uses numbers from a quantum source for prize draws, dice rolls and other everyday decisions. The idea is to make a specialized technology available in familiar situations, through a simple experience on your phone.

The app queries the Cisco Outshift API, which provides numbers generated using quantum hardware. The phone acts as an interface for requesting and using that data; the physical generation takes place in the provider's infrastructure.

How it connects to quantum randomness

Pseudorandom generators calculate sequences using algorithms and an initial state. A quantum source obtains entropy from physical measurements, which is then processed into numbers that an application can use.

That distinction offers another way to generate randomness, but it does not by itself make an application invulnerable. Security and trust also depend on the implementation, the connection to the service and the controls applied to the data received.

Our aim with Heissen QRNG is to demonstrate this technology through everyday uses and encourage interest in its possibilities.

The challenges ahead

Adoption and community. We want more people to try the app, share their experiences and help us identify new tools that would be useful in their daily lives.

Our own infrastructure. We plan to explore our own quantum hardware and an API that would provide access to third parties. This is a future line of work that requires development, validation and appropriate controls for each use case.
